Off The Page

Playreading series by David King

Off the Page is a monthly Play Reading Series hosted by Heritage Playhouse and Coast Actors (Life Skills – Advanced)

Off The Page presents Poor, an outlandish comedy/satire, that is sure to offend somebody. Written by Vancouver playwright Suzanne Ristic, and read by Janet Hodgkinson and Wanda Nowicki, Poor tracks Shelly Cormorant, a guilt-ridden One Percenter who, disguised as a bag lady, embeds herself in the Downtown East Side armed with enthusiasm and Holt Renfrew gift cards.

Originally written as a fifteen-minute monologue, Poor was selected from entries across Canada and the US, for the Solo Collective Theatre 2013 Emerging Playwrights Competition. The standing room only audience hailed it as “…smart, cutting, hilarious.”

Those three words, and her desire to expand her comical swipe at the One Percent, launched Ristic on a one-year play development frenzy. “I read constantly about the great imbalance of wealth in our society but haven’t come across any current plays that tackle the subject in a humorous way. The main character’s unique perspective and misguided efforts struck me as something that might provoke as well as entertain. I was driven to develop and expand the play to 90 minutes because I’m shocked at how willingly our society, and I include myself, have handed over our rights to the ruling elite. Poor’s time is now.”

You are invited to the reading of Poor on November 4, at 1 pm, at the Heritage Playhouse.

There will be an audience talkback following the reading.  Support professional theatre on the sunshine coast and become part of the process.

Admission by donation.
