About ANNE WHEELER and BYE BYE BLUES
A prairie girl, ANNE WHEELER studied mathematics, music and theatre before joining a film collective in the early 1970s that focused on political documentaries. In 1979 she wrote and made A War Story, a feature documentary based on her father’s diaries, written while he was a prisoner of war in Singapore and Formosa. During the 1980s, she was writing and directing fictional drama including Loyalties, The Diviners, The War Between Us, Better than Chocolate, and The Horses of McBride. Gibsons residents may remember her as the director of the Beachcombers’ Christmas Movie shot here in 2004.
BYE BYE BLUES is Anne’s best-known film, a Canadian classic, and winner of many national and international awards. It was inspired by her mother’s war time years on the prairies. After Anne’s father was captured by the Japanese, her mother did not know if her father was alive, and had no way to support herself and her children. Bye Bye Blues is the story of how Anne’s mother survived those years.
Anne Wheeler has been honoured with seven Honorary Doctorate degrees and the Order of Canada for her work in film. In 2020 she published her first book of stories, Taken by the Muse, which documents her early experiences of becoming a filmmaker. At our fundraising event on October 27, Anne will introduce Bye Bye Blues and tell us about the making of it; and she will stay to answer questions after the screening.
